To avoid silhouetting the subject I manually metered for the bright background sky and filled in the subject with the correct amount of fill flash.

I could have shot without using fill flash but that would have needed a tripod and longer timed exposure to get the face correctly exposed and the background sky and clouds would become bleached out.

Shot on a Nikon D2Xs with Elinchrom studio flash against a white colorama backdrop.

A main light [softbox], on one side of subject and a large silver reflector filling in the shadow on the opposite side. This gave a few "stops" less illumination on the opposite side which helps to give the subject plenty of 3 dimension.
